On the outskirts of Methven, with the Sothern Alps and Mount Hutt rising in the distance, the Mackenzie Home blends high-country serenity with cutting-edge smart home technology. Completed in September 2023, it is a modern marvel where thoughtful design and intelligent systems create effortless living.
The Vision
The homeowners, Craige and Roz MacKenzie, approached us with a goal: to create a fully automated home that was easy to manage while being highly customisable. Having experienced Control4 in their holiday home, they were eager to expand its capabilities in their new build—this time integrating lighting, audio-visual systems, climate control, security, energy efficiency, irrigation and more.
Our Role
We were proud to be the contractors responsible for the electrical, heating, solar, and automation systems. The project’s success was defined by the seamless integration of these systems through Control4, delivering a smart home experience tailored to the Mackenzie’s lifestyle.
Smart Climate Control
One of the most impressive features is the automated climate regulation. Using electric window openers, dampers, and air conditioners, the system responds dynamically to indoor temperatures and external weather forecasts. For example, upper windows open automatically to shed excess heat when the temperature exceeds 25°C—provided the air conditioning isn’t running and wind speeds are low. The plant room, which houses the communications rack and heating systems, recycles its heat back into the home via the ducting system, reducing energy waste and improving comfort.
Lighting & Audio Visual
Lighting throughout the home is fully automated, with scenes tailored for day, night, and holiday modes. Custom LED strips were installed in blind recesses and bathroom bulkheads, adding a touch of elegance. The media room features a Samsung 78” OLED paired with a 7.1 channel Integra system, while distributed audio is powered by Triad AMS and Signature Series ceiling speakers, offering independent control across multiple zones.
Security & Access
Security was a top priority. The home features:
- Digital keypads at four entry points
- CCTV cameras and a video intercom
- Smart locks integrated with the security alarm
- Automated notifications if doors or windows are left open
Family members have personalised access codes, allowing secure entry even when the homeowners are away.
Energy Efficiency & Futureproofing
Energy usage is monitored and optimised through smart scheduling. Surplus solar energy is prioritised for heating the spa and other systems. During prewire, we installed ducts and accessways to allow for future upgrades, including EV chargers and outdoor lighting.

Network & Remote Management
A robust Araknis network ensures reliable connectivity for all devices. Using OvrC, both our team and the homeowners can remotely manage and reboot devices, ensuring smooth operation and quick troubleshooting.
Behind the Scenes
A centralised switchboard in the garage was designed to accommodate all systems, enabling a tidy and well – organised layout. Cable pathways were planned to complement the home’s structure, resulting in a reliable and easily maintained solution.
Client Reflections

“We love how the system uses heat from the plant room to warm the house. The automated windows and blinds respond to temperature and sunlight, helping us save energy while keeping our classic car protected from fading. It’s smart living at its best.” – Craige & Roz
